Domestic Violence & Child Abuse for Family Attorneys

The Dangers and What To Do About It

Every day, approximately five children die because of child abuse. One in four women will experience intimate partner violence (IPV) in their lifetimes, and of women at high risk, up to 68 percent will experience near-fatal strangulation by their partner. In many strangulation/suffocation cases, there is no visible sign of injury. In child abuse cases, it is often difficult to recognize the signs of abuse. This presentation is designed to educate the audience on recognition of signs and symptoms of abuse and strangulation.

Upon completion of this course, the attendee will:

1) Understand the mechanism behind soft tissue injuries such as bruises, abrasions, lacerations and cuts.
2) Understand the anatomy and pathophysiology behind strangulation assaults.
3) Understand the risk of lethality from strangulation assaults.
4) Identify and differentiate normal patterns of injury from those seen in abuse.
