Utilizing Paralegals in the Practice of Law

Legal Ethics for Attorneys (and Paralegals)

Discussion will cover examples of questionable ethical actions involving confidentiality and privilege; contact with a represented client; holding an administrative hearing in the absence of counsel; medical record access in client files; various violations of the Rules of Professional Conduct; and a review of the California Supreme Court decision in Dynamex and AB 5, which codified that decision as statute and its ethical implications for attorneys and paralegals.

Spanos, Shafiq - professional - legal support

Gregory “Shafiq” Spanos, Paralegal, Fiumara & Milligan Law, PC

With a Bachelor of Arts degree from Brown University and after graduating from SSU with a paralegal certificate in 2009, Shafiq has worked for several firms in Santa Rosa as support for civil litigation departments. Much of the work has revolved around the medical field: subpoenaing and reviewing medical record for personal injury and medical malpractice cases, as well as change of ownership applications for nursing facilities. Shafiq had been a contract paralegal until the California Supreme Court changed the laws and paralegals can no longer be independent contractors. He has since joined Fiumara & Milligan Law, PC, and works primarily in the civil ligation side of the business. Recently he has assisted in preparing Petitions for Writ of Mandamus to the District Court of Appeal. Shafiq is the Chair of the Advisory Committee for the Paralegal Program at the Santa Rosa Junior College and is the section liaison to the Sonoma County Bar Association Board for the Paralegal and Legal Support Section. He served on the Board of the Redwood Empire Association of Paralegals before it became a section of the Sonoma County Bar Association, and served as the REAP representative to the California Alliance of Paralegal Associations.
