Cal-OSHA Update

What the New Regulations Mean for Employment Practitioners

California employers will face several newly enacted and currently proposed regulations in 2020. These include regulations related to wildfire smoke protection, workplace violence prevention, indoor heat protection and access to Injury and Illness Prevention Programs. We will discuss the status of these regulations, what to expect in 2020 and how to advise your clients regarding compliance.

As a partner with Walter & Prince LLP, Lisa Prince works with employers, safety directors, risk managers, and human resources administrators on the development of effective, preventive safety programs that answer regulatory mandates. Her litigation practice is now focused on representing employers in defense of OSHA citations and serious and willful misconduct claims.

Ms. Prince is a member of the Labor and Employment Sections of the American, California State and Sonoma County Bar Associations, the American Society of Safety Engineers, and the Safety and Health Council of the Associated General Contractors of California (AGC). Ms. Prince is a dynamic and informative speaker delivering presentations on variety of topics to organizations as various as State Compensation Insurance Fund, the American Society of Safety Engineers, AgSafe, National Safety Management Society and the Construction Employers’ Association. With partner, Fred Walter, she is the author of the Workplace Safety chapter of the Continuing Legal Education of the Bar publication “Advising California Employers and Employees”.

Mr. Smith is a safety and risk management professional with over 35 years of experience in construction, manufacturing, health care and service industries. The goal of his practice is to prevent injuries / illnesses and to control the costs of loss.

Mr. Smith started in the safety profession with a consulting firm. He entered the insurance industry with California Casualty and Zenith Insurance. He moved into management at Heath Cal (C.E. Heath Compensation & Liability Insurance Company). He was Director, Risk Management at CareAmerica Compensation Insurance Co before starting a consulting company.

Mr. Smith is a published author in Professional Safety, NSMS Insights, AGC California Constructor and Concrete Construction. He has been invited to speak before groups from the World of Concrete to the National Safety Management Society.

Mr. Smith is a Certified Safety Professional (Board Certified), an Associate in Risk Management and a Certified Safety and Health Manager. A Professional Member of the American Society of Safety Professionals (formerly the ASSE), he was promoted to be a member of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society. He is a member of the National Fire Protection Association and an associate member of the Forensic Expert Witness Association.

Mr. Smith received the distinguished ASSE Consultants Practice Specialty (CPS) Safety Professional of the Year (SPY) award at ASSE’s 100th Anniversary Professional Development Conference (PDC), held June 12-15, 2011 in Chicago, IL. The American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) recognized safety professionals across the country for their contributions to the safety, health and environmental (SH&E) field, as well as their contributions to individual practice specialties.

He is a graduate of Cogswell Polytechnical College (BS Safety Management) and Ohio University (BGS Government/Communication). Continuing education includes the University of Southern California’s Institute of Safety and Systems Management and the University of California.
